Case Study: Scout Donation Platform

The World Organisation of the Scout Movement (WOSM) and the World Scout Foundation (WSF), came together to launch a joint project - Scout Donation Platform.

So when they reached out to Raisely's Campaign Onboarding team for help, we jumped at the chance to earn a new merit badge we could wear with pride. So here it is...

The Brief

  1. Design and build a fundraising platform that enables Scout groups all over the world to submit a 'Project' worthy of support, that could then be published and  shared across the globe.
  2. Celebrate the new partnership between the WOSM & WSF by creating a platform where both can exist and both can reach their individual fundraising goals.
  3. Integrate Scouts existing single-sign-on setup with Raisely, so users can use their existing Scout logins in Raisely.

Design First

Scouts worked with an agency to develop a new brand for the Scout Donation Platform, so new colours, new logo, and some cool wallpaper patterns were ours to play with. Our design team mocked up detailed designs for the Home page and fundraising pages, unique to the the SDP. We also were able to create a neat icon-set that could be used throughout the campaign.

This process of designing first helps speed projects up, even though many see it as a optional step. It helped ensure that the new brand worked across pages and the right 'flourish' could be added where needed.

Next, Develop

The campaign had a key element - the ability for individual Scout members to submit a project, have that project reviewed, and then if approved, the project has its own fundraising page ready to take donations. So using Raisely's Peer to Peer foundation, with the use Profiles was a no-brainer.

Though on top of that were two other needs - ability to create one-off Appeals for special cases, and the opportunity for individual Scout Members to create their own personal fundraising pages.

So, we used the 3 different Profile types for each of these scenarios.

  • organisation profiles = Appeals
  • team profiles = Projects
  • & individual = well... individual.

Now Projects were the main focus in all this, so we worked hard on the Projects Profile Page to make sure it presented all the information needed to inspire donors to give and allow for it's impact to be clearly seen. The heavy lifting though was in the Projects Page, where donors could look through all the Projects currently approved and ready for funding. This took some custom work to make the Profile Grid show what we wanted, and also lead us to creating a cool new Project Filter block that could filter.

The rest was pretty straight forward, developing out the other campaign pages so the it's function and brand were playing well together.

And supporting the team from Scouts to make copy/image/form updates was great, helping their confidence in the platform grow!

Single Sign On (SSO)

There was another unique part to this project that led our team to develop a whole new integration, now available for other organisations... Single Sign On! It's becoming more the case that charities have their own App, giving supporters unique experiences. So the integration allows supporters to use their App login as their Raisely login, creating a far more seamless process. For Scouts, it acted as the gate keeper, ensuring only global Scout members could create projects too!

Conclusion: Our Take Aways

Every project Raisely does helps us learn more, as we listen to your ideas and then develop them. So what did we learn with Scouts?

  • Scouts are super cool! Everyone we worked with in this Project was just delightful. With excitement they dived right into the platform and were able to learn how to update and manage the campaign on their own.
  • Profile types (ind, team, org) can be used independently if needed, rather than hierarchical
  • We should add a Raisely feature request for a Profile Grid filter block
  • SSO improved Scouts database management 10-fold, and looks to be a terrific offering for organisations with an existing supporter App

Head to donate.scout.org to view their campaign, and consider giving to one of their projects as they support Youth around the globe change our world for good.
